Les Buttes Chaumont

The Buttes Chaumont park is among the most beautiful in the capital. There is a superb suspension bridge, a waterfall, a cave, a lake, magnificent trees ... For centuries the Buttes were quarries. One extracted there  gypsum then used for the manufacture of plaster. When the quarries were exhausted, the place became a huge landfill, among the largest in Paris. Horse rendering was also practiced there. A little further, on the fighting square, we organized shows ... Struggles between dogs, pigs, bears, wolves until death. The terrible Gibet de Montfaucon was also in the neighborhood. It was not until the arrival of Napoleon III to transform the neighborhood. The Emperor was inspired by London for the transformation of Paris. Il disposait à Versailles d'une maison (Parc aux cerfs) où des (très) jeunes femmes étaient à sa dispostion.Louise O Murphy fut une de ses maitresses, comme les 5 soeurs Mailly Nesle.... Mais, ce sont Madame de Pompadour et Madame du Barry qui demeurent les plus célèbres. Vincent arrived in Auvers on the 20th of May 1890. This little place was a bit his last chance. After the problems Vincent faced in the south of France in Arles and St Remi de Provence, Vincent decided to settle in Auvers. Why? There he was just 20 miles away from his brother Theo living in Paris. Besides in Auvers there was the Doctor Gachet, friend of the artists, who was eager to help him. Vincent stayed 70 days in Auvers. During this period he painted 70 masterpieces about the doctor, the doctor's daughter, the church... they are today among the most famous in the world. During this tour you will discover the last places frequented by Vincent Van Gogh: Auberge Ravoux, House of the Doctor Gachet, the fields.... Visit finishes at the cemetery of Auvers. The St Denis Basilica and the royal tombs
