Arrival at Edinburgh Airport. Meet with your professional guide specialized in religious trips and your driver. Visit of the Scottish capital. Discover the Royal Mile, the Castle (outside), Princes Street and the Parliament of Scotland.

Reformation in Edinburgh

Walk in the footsteps of John Knox in Edinburgh. Visit the John Knox Museum House
Discover St Gilles Cathedral, the Statue of John Knox and the place where he was buried.
You will also visit the Royal Palace of Holyrood. In the oldest part of the castle you will see the apartments of Mary Stuart Queen of Scotland. Your guide will tell you about his tumultuous encounters with John Knox.
Discover also the church of Greyfriars. It is here that the Presbyterians signed the National Covenant. In the adjacent cemetery you will be moved by the story of the faithful dog Bobby. You may meet also one of the many Scottish ghosts .... Overnight in Edinburgh.

The mysterious Rosslyn Chapel

Excursion this morning south of Edinburgh (10 miles) to visit the Rosslyn Chapel and its mysterious sculptures. Will you succeed in deciphering Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code? Back to Edinburgh in the afternoon. You will have free time to visit the National Museum or the very rich National Painting Gallery. You can admire beautiful paintings by El Greco, Rembrandt, Van Gogh or even Monet. There is also the amazing "Vision after the Sermon" by Gauguin. You can also take a short hike on one of the hills of the city.  You will have at the top of superb panoramas on the old city. Overnight in Edinburgh

Today go on a day trip to St Andrews. City particularly rich for the history of the Reformation. You will see the monument of martyrs. George Wishart was one of the great Scottish reformers. He introduced to Scotland the teachings of Calvin or Zwingli. He was arrested by Cardinal David Beaton and executed because of his beliefs.
It was in St Andrews that John Knox preached for the first time in Trinity Church. It was there that he was arrested by the French troops and sent to the galleys for 19 months.
You will of course see the remains of the Cathedral, the famous golf course and the beach where the "chariots of fire" were filmed with the incredible Eric Liddell. Back to Edinburgh.  Overnight in Edinburgh.

Heart of Scotland

Excursion to Lochleven (Edinburgh Loch Leven 27 miles) Like Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots cross the loch by boat to join Loch Leven Castle. Discover this island and this castle full of history. With notably debates on religious issues between Mary Queen of Scotland and John Knox. Mary Stuart was imprisoned there. But managed to escape in 1567. Continue to Perth (Loch Leven - Perth 19 miles) In 1559, in the Church of St. John, John Knox gave a sermon against falsehood, deception, idolatry. You will see why this sermon was a turning point in the history of the Reformation in Scotland. In the afternoon visit Stirling (Perth Stirling 37 miles). Situated on a steep rock, the Stirling fortress was one of the most powerful and impregnable in Scotland. It was the permanent Royal residence at the time of the Stuarts. From the fortress you can admire the Wallace Monument. In Stirling, also discover the Holy Rude Church (Holy Cross) Back to Edinburgh for Scottish dinner including Haggis and Whisky tasting

Departure this morning towards Haddington (19 miles) Birthplace of John Knox.
Then continue to Sir Walter Scott's house: Abbotsford. (Haddington Abbotsford 36 miles) This is one of the most fascinating places in Scotland. Visit his house full of unusual objects, his rich library of more than 9000 rare volumes and the writer's office. Nearby you will see the ruins of Melrose Abbey where was buried the heart of Robert the Bruce.
Then make your first visit to England to Berwick upon tweed. Named chaplain of the young Protestant king Edward VI, John Knox preached in the Church of the Holy Trinity. There he met and married Marjory Bowes. In the late afternoon join Durham (Berwick Durham 80 miles) The city of Durham is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its castle and cathedral. This is where Gothic art was born! We invite you to re-read the "Pillars pf the Earth" by Ken Follet revealing so much the passage from the Romanesque style to the Gothic style. Overnight in Durham.

This morning discover the beautiful city of York. (Durham - York 70 miles) Visit the Cathedral one of the most beautiful in England and the largest in Northern Europe. You will be impressed by the rood screen (one of the few still existing in Europe) with the English Monarch Statues.
In the afternoon visit Bedford (York - Bedford = 157 miles) This is where John Bunyan lived, was imprisoned for 12 years because of his beliefs. During his internment he wrote his allegorical work: "The Pilgrim's progress". Work translated into more than 200 languages. Visit the John Bunyan Museum.
Arrive in  Cambridge in the evening (Bedford - Cambridge = 30 miles).  Overnight in Cambridge

Cambridge and its colleges

 
Discover today Cambridge and its famous colleges. Cambridge is steeped in history.  For example this is where Oliver Cromwell began his political career. You will see how the ideas of the reform  century spread here in the early sixteenth and how they have marked characters such as Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer or Nicholas Ridley.
You will visit 2 of the most prestigious colleges: Trinity & King's College. In the afternoon free time to enjoy the city center and why not take a cruise on the river Cam.
Dinner included and overnight in Cambridge.

Travel this morning to London (64 miles) and visit of highlights: Trafalgar Square, Westminster Parliament (outside), Big Ben, Piccadily Circus,...  Visit the impressive Cathedral St Paul project by Christopher Wren. Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington are among the many celebrities to be buried there. The funeral of Sir Winston Churchill took place there too. In the adjacent garden we can discover a beautiful statue of John Wesley. Outside the main entrance was the Lollards Tower where many Protestants were imprisoned. The square of St Paul's church was once a high place of execution of martyrs. This is also where the bishop publicly burned William Tyndale's Bibles. Night in London

Visit this morning the impressive Tower of London. Built in the XIth century by the Norman king: William the Conqueror. It sheltered many events in British history (often tragic). In addition to the Beefeaters and gigantic crows, it is also home to the jewels of the crown. Also visit the beautiful Banqueting house. Only remnant of Whitehall Palace. You can admire the magnificent ceiling of the gallery painted by Rubens. It was at the entrance of the building that King Charles I was executed. In the afternoon enjoy some free time for your own London experience: Shopping in Harrods or Covent Garden, walk to Hyde Park, visit the British Museum or the Westminster Abbey where most monarchs are buried. Excursion to Canterbury (60 miles) Visit the magnificent Cathedral of Canterbury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Relive the struggles between the Church and the State through the assassination of Thomas Beckett by the henchmen of Henry II Plantagenet. Visit also the ruins of the abbey founded by St Augustine. Your guide will also tell you the story of the Archbishop of Cantorbury: Thomas Cranmer. Erudite sympathizer of Luther's ideas. His theological role was very important after the cancellation of the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. He wrote the "Book of Prayer" which will remain in force in the Anglican Church until the twentieth century. Farewell dinner in London. Night in London
